Nope, the official dub's actually pretty close to the fansubs. I had fun synching up the last aired Adult Swim ep with the one I've 'borrowed', and it surprised me how similar the translations were.

I sometimes watch anime DVDs with the English dubbed audio and the English subtitles on, just to look for differences. The subtitles tend to be more faithful translations, while the dub dialog is "adjusted" for a variety of reasons – sometimes, just reworded so the dialog better synchs up to the mouth movements; other times, to "correct" things which may be offensive to some viewers. The most famous instances of "corrections" tend to involve lesbian couples being turned into "cousins" or "best friends" (or one of them turned into male character with a male voice actor), or the removal of references to "death". Of course, one of the funniest "corrections" I've seen was, IIRC, in Kare Kano where a female student made reference to her Home Ec class, but in the dub it was changed to a Math class.

The series is still in production; the filler was, as usual for filler, giving the print story a chance to get ahead of the anime,

A common problem. At least they got the series back on track; Ranma ½ got bogged down on filler, and the series ended before the manga got to some of the really good parts.

Bleach is still fairly new to the English language market,

Which is funny, because I've been hearing references to it for years, so I'd assumed there was more of it out there. I mean, legally out there. ;)

...lesbian couples being turned into "cousins" or "best friends"...
*snort* Stupidest thing I've seen not on ABC, those edits. And when they changed the gay guy, um... Jadeite? to a woman because OMGGAY!

...one of them turned into male character with a male voice actor...
Who/where was this?

Actually, the anime's soft-pedalled some of the instances in the manga before it even crossed the Pacific. A vaguely-phrased example: minor character gets his arm lopped clean off (it helps ID the villain, for one) but in the anime, he just gets a bad cut.

Dunno. Wiki says the manga started in 2001 and the anime in 2004. That was well into the whole fansub-of-course gig, no? So when it got big in Japan and people got curious, it was easier to get ahold of. I guess. Curiosity creates demand, international book orders, people notice the numbers.... [shrug?] It's just on its first run at Adult Swim - I just checked, last Saturday was ep. 32 (further than I thought).

I finished the first 26 episodes, and can't say I liked the way they ended ("To be continued"). Now I'll have to get more. Lovin' it!

I'm delighted! :D It's moving really fast at this point, isn't it?

Cool.

Right now my wife is BT-ing some stuff; I'll see about d/l-ing more Bleach next week.
