Date: 2007-05-09 11:59 am (UTC)So far, so good! (I downloaded the first 26 episodes. Unfortunately, they're the dubbed for TV versions.)
(It takes off like a rocket at Ep. 20.)
Twenty episodes is an awfully long countdown...
Re: OT
Date: 2007-05-09 12:16 pm (UTC)It's not so much 'just' a countdown, because you're getting a lot of info and action getting there. Kubo Tite, the mangaka, is a brilliant twisty storyteller and everything counts.
Dattebayo has the newer episodes - when you get to that point, you want to skip from ep 64 through 108 because they're filler and the story's kinda stupid - and I got the beginning and Soul Society arc from bleachportal.net and bleachexile.com. They're donation-ware, so technically free (morally obliged), although you have to sign up to download.
Viz has only released 2 DVDs so far, I think, with dual dub-tracks plus subtitles on the Japanese track (my quasisister got them but she wasn't positive about the features - too busy to watch yet).
And yup, the icon's significant. ^_^
Re: OT
Date: 2007-05-09 01:06 pm (UTC)OK, I was hoping that it wasn't one where extensive "liberties" were taken with the translation. Of course, that's not as big a problem as it used to be.

I haven't done any "research" into this series yet (because often, if you search for info on a series, you also get spoilers). How many episodes are there, total, or is it still in production? (I won't get anywhere near episode 64 anytime soon anyway, but I'll keep that in mind.)

My wife is signed up (and donates) to a couple of torrent sites.

That's too bad … because normally, if a series really grabs me (after I watch some downloaded episodes), I'll go out and buy it.

But not in any way I'd get yet, right?
Re: OT
Date: 2007-05-09 01:38 pm (UTC)The series is still in production; the filler was, as usual for filler, giving the print story a chance to get ahead of the anime, since the usual ratio is about 2 chapters per episode. It's up to episode 125 as of today/tomorrow - it airs on Wednesdays. The story shows no signs of slowing down, but strewth, KT is unpredictable.
Those two Bleach sites have direct downloads; they might also have torrents, I don't remember.
Bleach is still fairly new to the English language market, which is why they're only up to two DVDs. Wait... [goes and checks] ...no, sorry, they're speeding up - Vol. 5 is set for the end of July, and that's close to current with Adult Swim rightthisminute. Each DVD appears to have 4 episodes.
The Viz edition manga's announced Vol. 20 for August, but if all the current (Japanese) chapters were collected, they'd be at about Vol. 31. It's about nine chapters per tankubon. It's a weekly series, about 18-19pp per, as opposed to, say, Fullmetal Alchemist, which is a 40pp monthly with five chapters per collected volume.
Oh, and the icon? Not untilllll [checks reference] about episode 36. :) Not a spoiler, just an... anticipation.
Re: OT
Date: 2007-05-09 02:14 pm (UTC)I sometimes watch anime DVDs with the English dubbed audio and the English subtitles on, just to look for differences. The subtitles tend to be more faithful translations, while the dub dialog is "adjusted" for a variety of reasons – sometimes, just reworded so the dialog better synchs up to the mouth movements; other times, to "correct" things which may be offensive to some viewers. The most famous instances of "corrections" tend to involve lesbian couples being turned into "cousins" or "best friends" (or one of them turned into male character with a male voice actor), or the removal of references to "death". Of course, one of the funniest "corrections" I've seen was, IIRC, in Kare Kano where a female student made reference to her Home Ec class, but in the dub it was changed to a Math class.
The series is still in production; the filler was, as usual for filler, giving the print story a chance to get ahead of the anime,
A common problem. At least they got the series back on track; Ranma ½ got bogged down on filler, and the series ended before the manga got to some of the really good parts.
Bleach is still fairly new to the English language market,
Which is funny, because I've been hearing references to it for years, so I'd assumed there was more of it out there. I mean, legally out there. ;)
Re: OT
Date: 2007-05-09 02:32 pm (UTC)*snort* Stupidest thing I've seen not on ABC, those edits. And when they changed the gay guy, um... Jadeite? to a woman because OMGGAY!
...one of them turned into male character with a male voice actor...
Who/where was this?
Actually, the anime's soft-pedalled some of the instances in the manga before it even crossed the Pacific. A vaguely-phrased example: minor character gets his arm lopped clean off (it helps ID the villain, for one) but in the anime, he just gets a bad cut.

Dunno. Wiki says the manga started in 2001 and the anime in 2004. That was well into the whole fansub-of-course gig, no? So when it got big in Japan and people got curious, it was easier to get ahold of. I guess. Curiosity creates demand, international book orders, people notice the numbers.... [shrug?] It's just on its first run at Adult Swim - I just checked, last Saturday was ep. 32 (further than I thought).
