Quick thoughts on listening to HBP

Poor fox.

  • If Horace is 'old' but not as old as AD, would he have been teaching Potions to Hagrid as well?

  • Was his retirement the immediate occasion for Snape becoming Potions Master AND Head of Slytherin, or did they come to Snape at separate times?

  • [AU] If Slughorn was teaching Potions to the Marauders' year, that means he was almost certainly Head of Slytherin and Potions Master to Medeni as well. [/AU]

  • [AU] Were Medeni and Regulus in the same year? We've never touched on whether she had to throw frog spawn at the Slytherin boys. [/AU]

  • Does anybody else get a feeling of Oscar Wilde around Slughorn, or is it just me being only vaguely familiar with the man and his works? (Or maybe even the HedonismBot from Futurama?)

  • Somebody else was a little creeped out by his apparent tendency to collect more boys than girls, and true, because of the dependent and minor status of most of the Slug Club(s), there's a tiny twinge of a possible.... But it generally seems to be more admiration and reasonably benign manipulation than anything which should never be acted upon at school.
...and that's all I got written down before work started short-circuiting my thought processes.

I can sort of see the Oscar Wilde vibe, since you mention it, but I don't think Slughorn's quite soulful enough to be on par with Oscar. HedonismBot, on the other hand...;)

Hmm, I did get Wilde-vibes. Good to know it wasn't just me! :) Horcruxes seemed Dorian Grayish, too...

Excellent point!

Poor fox indeed! I didn'a like that one bit.

Slytherin is all about Power, and social power is just as valid as any other kind. Certainly that's what Slug Club teaches.

Oh, well said. The 'social ambition' part didn't occur to me.
