Happy St. David's Day!

Also - Robert Conrad's birthday, and Sirius and Medeni's wedding anniversary, and... goodness, there must be more I'm forgetting this year because I remember never being able to keep up before! :)

Abney Park interviewed on local Seattle news

http://www.king5.com/video/eveningmagazine-index.html?nvid=409341 (It's a pretty nice interview, too.)

Apparently KING Channel 5 wants to pretend they're the omphalos of steampunkery now, to suit civic ego. Well, they're half right. All the steampunks and gaslamp fantasists I know that don't already live in the PacNW want to move to Portland.

Two things

Steampunk cakeworks - (photographs and commentary) Somebody tell Kaja, if she hasn't seen already?

"Buffy vs. Edward" - A remix video of what would happen if the Slayer met the Sparkly Vampire from Twilight. (The socio notes in the summary make it twice as sweet.)

Here's an interesting article: 1000 True Fans

A concept where fandom is actually seen as economically valuable.

It's a little long, but worth a few minutes. What are your thoughts? (Other than 'Happy Birthday', that is.)

Note for Yvonne: 'Lupin' is Wolverine from the X-Men, claws prominently displayed. Hee!

What a great quote!

Nicked from qadgop's link:
A very short bit from GENDER AND FAN STUDIES (ROUND FIVE): GEOFFREY LONG AND CATHERINE TOSENBERGER

Because fanfiction circulates unofficially, it isn't bound by the conventions and limitations of institutionalized publishing. And that's a big deal; it allows people to stake claims over texts that they wouldn't normally be allowed to if they wanted to publish, and frees them to tell the stories they want to tell. You can do things in fanfiction that would be difficult or impossible to do in fiction intended for commercial publication, such as experiments with form and subject matter that don't fit with prevailing tastes. This freedom is especially felt in representations of romantic and sexual relationships -- and this is a major reason, I think, why women, queer folk, and young people have found fanfic so appealing, because these are all groups whose sexual expressions have been heavily policed. It's a way of asserting rights of interpretation over texts that may be patriarchal, heteronormative, and/or contain only adult-approved representations of children and teenagers.

There's quite a bit more if you have a few minutes to read.

Whew, that's a relief

The Jedi Postal Master results must just not have been displaying correctly when I looked before.

Current standings (as of this posting) are:
  1. Yoda
  2. Darth Vader
  3. Leia & R2
  4. Luke on Tatooine
  5. Han and Chewie
  6. Anakin vs. Obi-wan
  7. Boba Fett
  8. Stormtroopers
  9. Millennium Falcon
  10. Obi-wan on the Death Star
  11. X-wing
  12. Darth Maul
  13. Queen Padme
  14. C3PO
  15. The Emperor
Well, that's a relief.

Although... it's tempting to vote for the Stormtroopers instead just so the 501st can have their own sheet of stamps... (but I don't think there's time to swing the vote).

The USPS Jedi Shipping and Mailing Master wants YOU!

(now for something lighter)

A Mighty Power is in Your Hands!

The Star Wars stamp pane consists of 15 individual stamps.
Roll over the pane to view each stamp.
Allow the Force to flow through you and click on your favorite.

Choose wisely.
ONLY ONE INDIVIDUAL STAMP WILL MAKE HISTORY
and be produced on its own sheet.

VOTE TODAY AND EVERY DAY! [they'll even send you reminders]

(I'm quoting here, I hope you know.)

Uhhhh, guys? I think the Emperor is winning [grimace]. There's 21 days left - who else here is a Han Solo fan...?

Busy day today!

Item the first:

Happy Saint David's Day!
Item the Second:

Happy THIRD anniversary,Medeni and Sirius!
Item the Third:

Happy Robert Conrad's birthday! (he's 72 today - pretty good considering what he's been doing all these years!)

And y'know, I bet I forgot stuff, too. (For me, it's also 'semi-happy paycheque day!')
