From Salon: 'The short, disgusting life of the Hummer'

YAY! The Hummer is moribund!

P.S. According to these numbers in the Washington Post, there were less than 4000 H1 Hummers sold ever. Statistically, it seems improbable then that I should keep FINDING myself behind them in a city of this size! Did they sell a quarter of those in South Florida??

Hurray! Best news I've heard all day!

It's too bad that GM will probably axe the Saturn line, though. :P

Maybe they'll cut them loose. They were independents before GM bought them, weren't they?

No, GM founded Saturn themselves. I am sad monkey and will probably test drive my brother's hybrid Ford Explorer before my lease is up in the spring.

As for the Hummer: every time I see on on the road, I want to shout out my window, "Sorry about your penis!" ::cheery wave::~~~~~

I just e-mail you this, but let's share!

No. Saturn was a branch of GM from its inception. The purpose of the brand was to give GM an outlet from its usual line of crap cars - Saturns were supposed to be affordable and stylish, and one of their trademarks was a no-haggle price. Many customers didn't know that Saturns were GMs, which was kinda the point. Unfortunately, many of their current models are cross-platform with other GM lines (same car with a different trim package) and so they'll probably get canned.

I know - or at least I think I know - they pioneered parts-supply logistics with, I think, FedEx to minimise/streamline factory space.

I was fantasising that part of the bailout package would be that all new models would IMMEDIATELY have to be electric, fuel cell, biodiesel (for the truck line particularly) or compressed air. No more petrol burning, at all. If that's all that's available to buy new, people would start buying them.

Well, the bailout package could include a strong push to go green, but I think we are still a ways off from complete lack of dependence on fossil fuels. Hybrids are great, but the batteries ain't exactly environmentally friendly either, and they're tough to get serviced. Natural gas is an alternative, but it's still a fossil fuel. Hydrogen would be optimal, as long as the safety can be handled well - we all remember the Hindenburg.

Frankly, if we want to go green, forget the bailout and slap a big tax on gas! That money could and should go to fix our infrastructure, and it would hit people in the pocketbook and be a strong incentive towards fuel efficiency.

Huzzah! for the end of the Hummer! Oh, how I hate them!

I should have added about the time the news covered what I think was a local Hummer 'rally' of some sort. They all gathered in this park, and drove their juggernauts over little debris hills, o-how-impressive, to show that they could; and stood around with smug, self-congratulatory, bleep-you grins (at least on camera) on how wonderful their blatant exercises in waste and ego were.

I thought fondly of explosives right then, but had no B-52s to hand.

Hummer Rally, with Arc Lights!
Oh, happy thoughts, happy thoughts...

I read this post, then left the apartment, walked to the bus stop, and low and behold, there was a hummer parked at a meter across the street. If there were only 4000 of them made, I'm surprised I've seen so many too.
