The Food and Drug Administration on Thursday warned consumers not to use American Bullie A.B. Bull Pizzle Puppy Chews and Dog Chews as it is possibly infected with Salmonella, which can cause serious infections in dogs and cats.

That's right, folks - do not feed bovine generative members to your puppies.

In response to a news release – issued by ChemNutra Inc. during the evening of April 3, 2007 - Menu Foods today voluntarily expanded its pet food recall for selected "cuts and gravy" pet food products... to include all products manufactured with wheat gluten purchased from ChemNutra Inc. which Menu Foods' records show was first used on November 8, 2006 and last used on March 6, 2007.

As a result of actions previously taken by Menu Foods, the vast majority of the products affected by this expansion are already off retailers' shelves. No new brands have been added. A total of 20 varieties have been added to the recall list and the additional varieties are listed below. All Menu Foods products not made with the recalled wheat gluten are safe to consume.

As a precautionary measure, Sunshine Mills, Inc. ("Sunshine"), a branded and private-label pet food manufacturer based in Red Bay, Alabama, is voluntarily recalling a portion of its branded dog biscuits made at its Red Bay, Alabama biscuit plant during part of March 2007. These brands include: Nurture Chicken & Rice, Nurture Lamb & Rice, Pet Life Large, Pet Life Extra Large, Pet Life Large Variety, Pet Life Large Peanut Butter, Lassie Lamb and Rice, and Pet Life People Pleasers Dog Treats. Private label biscuits for six of Sunshine's customers were also affected. A complete list of affected biscuit brands, sizes, and codes is available below or at our website, www.sunshinemills.com.

YAY, the dog DOESN'T DIE! Ginmar was, IIRC, soooo tempted to bring this one cat home.... OH! Ginmar has a book coming out, did I point that out to you? I'd heard about ginmar's book! Most libraries will only buy things if they're reviewed in the professional journals (PW, LJ, Kirkus, etc.). Luckily, small press and/or topical books are getting more and more coverage these days. Seeing as how I heard about the book from a source completely outside of LJ/my flist, chances are good it'll get picked for review....

I can speak favorably about the gluten-caesin-free diet for at least some children with autism. celticdragonfly's eldest son showed amazing improvements in his behavior. Keeping him away from his favorite mac and cheese was sometimes a challenge though. Heh, I know how he feels!

Myfanwy's been doing much the same for her son. She's been buying lots of rice-based products lately, told me about Tinkyada pasta. She's also cut him off, per the doctor, from sucrose-based treats. Fructose et alia is apparently still all right. Do you remember how that works? It's something with the sugar's structure, but I can't remember the details.

The Boy also had some pre-determined problems w/ artificial colouring, especially the reds. This is why Myfi nearly went nuclear when she found out he'd managed to get and sneak-eat a whole package of Sour Patch Kids while we were driving....
