From the end of his 'New Rules' endshow monologue, March 31, 2006:
The Christian right are now officially the party of paranoia. Secularists are attacking Christmas! Gays are attacking marriage! Liberals are attacking values! White girls are being abducted at an alarming rate! You know, if you're going to be that paranoid all the time, just get high.

And the worst part is, the people bitching loudest about being persecuted for their Christianity aren't Christians at all. They're demagogues and conmen and scolds. And the only thing they worship is power. If you believe Jesus ever had a good word for war or torture or tax cuts for the rich, or raping the earth, or refusing water to dying migrants, then you might as well believe bunnies lay painted eggs.

And Jesus - and Jesus never said a word about gay marriage. He was much too busy hanging out with 12 guys. Now - now I know George Bush says Jesus Christ changed his heart. But believe me, Dick Cheney changed it back. The only thing Bush has in common with Jesus is they both went into their father's business and got crucified for it.

Thomas Jefferson called the type of Christian who trumpets his own belief in the divinity of Jesus rather than the morality of Jesus "pseudo-Christians." And that's who's running our country today. And since they thrive so much on turning water into "whining"—and get off on their endless pretend persecution, this Easter season, let's give them what they want. Let's go to the zoo, get some lions, and feed them Tom DeLay.
Bolding mine.

Gotta love the red-headed left-handed Welsh-ancestried scientist who helped found this country, too. ;)

;aslkfjkls;flasj;lfjsljfasljflksjhg...

That reminds me of a couple of months ago at church when a guy from the Gideons (you know, the Bible-in-the-hotel-room people) was doing a temple talk and he mentioned that they had just placed something like their 1,000,000th Bible or some big number like that, and they gave it to George Bush. The sweet, grandmotherly lady who always sits behind us whispered, "Dang, I wish he'd read it."

Jefferson did rock.

Of course, I do recall a little something about the separation of church and state being mumbled about at the time, but apparently that's gone out of style. It means that ALL faiths are equal before the law, and NO religion should mandate the law.

Moreover, if the pseudo-Christians had studied - check Matthew 22:15-22. That pretty much covers it (even if I had to look it up to get the numbers right).

Good one! (And I had to look it up, too.)

My favourite priest has been saying things lately about *not* separating church and state -- but according to his definitions, it should mean that political decisions be made in an atmosphere of loving one's fellow humans (all of them), trying to do the best for everyone, not putting oneself first, turning the other cheek, and acting in kindness and caring. That's how a Christian should be praising God in the work of government. Strikes me it would work better than the present systems for any other religious groups in government, too ......

That's how a Christian should be doing ANYTHING. That's how every person of true and deeply felt faith should be doing anything. You scratch them all, they have the same essential message; just the path is different.

Of course I tend to throw Matthew 6:5-6 back at any of the corner evangelists but then anyone who goes on about the benefits of their religion to me without asking it going to get an earfull.

But, a caution...

This is where Great Aunt Cotton would throw out "The Merchant of Venice", Act I, scene iii, line 99 (depending on your edition). Specifically, "The devil can cite Scripture for his purpose."

Which would probably explain my current email .sig

"Yes I am an agent of Satan but my duties are largly ceremonial."

And remember, friends, if Jeshua Ben Miryam were alive today, he couldn't be president of the US of A.

First of all, to Corgi - what an awesome Bill Maher quote. Occasionally (it's rare, but it does happen) he can rub me the wrong way, and I sometimes disagree with him, but he's definitely got a wonderfully sharp wit and, not to sound too cliche, he says it like it is. This was definitely awesome, and I'm bookmarking that page for liberal (no pun intended) quotage.

Also, to [livejournal.com profile] barsukthom, whoever you are, that icon is HILARIOUS. I surfed by your user pics to check out your keywords and my impression is that you made it? If so, could I get your permission to swipe it (with credit, of course)? If not, no problem, but I just had to ask. Mockery and gaming geekery all in one, couldn't ask for more. :)

Oooo! A Jedi sighting! :D
YAY!

Getting to the 'New Rules' was one of those breadcrumb moments. Something else I was reading referenced Bill's 'New Rules', so to Google I went... then spent quite some time reading and quoting chunks at anybody silly enough to be IMming me at work (read: could not escape deluge). ;)

(Haven't gone Bleaching yet, I keep forgetting to start when I have good download access.)

I love Bill Maher. Whenever I read a quote like that, I (literally) relax, and give a big sigh of relief. Logic's back and somebody still loves it. Thank God.
