(Hey, it's better than listening to the news, right?)

  • If Slugworth taught Snape, Lily and the Marauders Potions; and Snape's an unparallelled (as far as we know) Potions genius, especially as evinced by his student-era notes... why doesn't Slughorn speak more of how brilliant he was?  Certainly, there's to be some comparisons between a student and her son, but Snape's the one who went on to make Potions a career....

  • Ron's watch that he received from his parents for his majority has stars in place of hands; we've seen Time Turners, for one, and we know that a simple locket's going to be a major player next book.  Is there something special about this watch?  Is it being waved before us the way we had 'oak-aged mead' whapped over our heads when Dumbledore visited the Dursleys'?

  • I just noticed - aren't all Dumbledore's appointment notes to Harry being delivered by, and only by, members of 'Dumbledore's Army'?

- Cuz I suspect that ol' Sluggy was a bit of a perv, and Lily's more attractive than Sevvie.

- It could be just a Really Kewl Wizarding Watch. On the other hand it could be significant. Perhaps something to do with astronomy?

You should see [livejournal.com profile] waccawheel's drawing of Slughorn w/ the Black brothers; she said 'he's a bit of an auntie, isn't he.' ^_^

1. I contemplated the first question for fic, although "Frog Prince" won't be finished until I actually figure out an ending. But I decided that Snape didn't like or trust Slughorn, probably didn't make any particular effort in class, and furthermore, he didn't have the flair, attractiveness or family background that Slughorn would appreciate.

2. Since JKR killed K2K, I offer no speculations on Ron's watch, except that it probably is significant.

3. Not all: the first note is delivered by a girl named Demelza, whom we'd only met a short time earlier, when she won a place on the Quidditch team as Chaser. But there's nothing to suggest she wasn't in the DA, and was just never brought to our notice before.

Re: 1 - You and [livejournal.com profile] chrysantza agree in kind, good point.

Re: 3 - thanks, I've got the audio in the car, which means without much flailing about (and getting up from where I just got comfortable on the couch, finally) I couldn't check easily.

So it's Demelza, then... somebody, then Ginny, then Luna? [stares at clock with irritation]

My brain cell has nothing to say about the second and third items, but as for the first, Slughorn is notably... pragmatic. Even if the positions of career Potions Master, Head of Slytherin, and newly-anointed DADA Master at Hogwarts were particularly illustrious-- and JKR certainly doesn't make them seem that great; within canon, Snape doesn't seem to have worldly riches or screaming groupies-- what does Slughorn have to gain by praising Snape to any of the Slug Club, particularly to Harry?

Also, do we nec'ly know whether the notes were written by chibi-Snape himself instead of by Eileen Prince as a schoolgirl?

 to the first point - as the others have said, as well. That should have occurred to me, but I'm not used to thinking in popularity terms. :)

I'll have to get back to you about the 2nd point, if somebody else doesn't beat me to it. I think there's something specific to that later on, but I haven't got back there yet. I'm up to disk... erm... 11?

Errr...the professor's name was Slughorn. Slugworth was one of the guys who stole Willy Wonka's candy-making secrets.

But that would make a veeeeery interesting crossover!
