Fic recs and other tidbits
May. 14th, 2005 12:27 amSome other 'fic recs from Inuyasha, Trigun and a smidgen of Fullmetal Alchemist (why yes, I do live on 'Adult Swim', how could you tell?)
- The Hero in the 21st Century -- the 'Little Doujinshi on the Prairie'. An Inuyasha post-series demi-AU and an amazing amount of creative work, no matter the canon. (Read it from the beginning and use the scripts where the graphics are broken. Don't forget the cast lists, too!)
- Rebound -- from the author/artist of The Hero in the 21st Century, a story about dealing with the loss of the magic of youth, set in an Inuyasha context. It's not as much about the manga/anime as you'd think.
- Multiple stories -- Scribe Figaro, who denigrates kir own ability to spin words, contributes several excellent pieces to the body of IY fanfic. Kir long one, If You Need Her, is worth every bit of your time.
- A Present for Pondy -- Windsorblue creates a delightful, teasing little ficlet from Lt. Riza Hawkeye's point of view in the Fullmetal Alchemist 'verse.
- Sand & Light - A Trigun virtual third season - another opus, as it consists of a full 24 'episodes' plus prologue -- all of which have consistent characterisation and plotting -- and includes illustrations (this link is to the 'basic' version, click on the index for the art).
- Layla has also written an interesting essay which pinged on some of the... discomforts I've experienced from fanfic. Y'know how I've had this sort of 'problem' with slash? Between
soupytwist and
musesfool, I finally got a Christmas bulb pop on over my head about that, that most slash is actually a sort of subgenre of Romance... but y'know, if you take a look at most of the stuff on, say, MediaMiner, do you really blame me for the EXTREMELY POOR first impression I formed?
C'mon, we're talking about a subgenre wh... lemme tell you a quick story. I was poking around a Farscape Usenet group (remember, back in the Dark Ages of the Internet, where you had to type everything?) when somebody posted that she had the Very First Farscape Slash Site on the Web. She was veryvery proud of herself. Allll puffed up. I went to look at one of these epitomes of primacy... and it was a violent, PWP, out-of-character piece of fake-gay trash. This is what was being shown to be as something to be proud of, right? So. Bad first impressions.
That isn't what Layla particularly has in her essay, but she does skim by the idea. One reminded me of the other. -
wombat1138 is not only a writer, but also a jeweler. She has an eBay shop in which she's got some very nifty beaded pieces, or as she says: Anime-inspired jewelry (FY, IY, etc.) made of fine materials such as gemstones, freshwater pearls, Czech glass, and sterling silver; beautidul and durable enough to go beyond cosplay into everyday wear. Also selling leftover beads and random other pretties. Take a look, and especially read her descriptions. They're a delight all in themselves. Expect me to be mumbling about magatama for a while.... - Think about this -- Edward Elric: probably the perfect combination of Vash the Stampede, Inuyasha... and Lord Miles Vorkosigan. Yeah??
(The blond, the red coat, the artificial arm, the short, the hyperactive, the brilliant-and-talented, the angst, the temper, the gold eyes....)
Take a look at some of the most marvellous dolls/soft-sculptures based on anime and historical characters you might ever see... and dogs! She also does dogs! Especially look at her 'Making Inuyasha' tutorial. Not only is the clothing detail brilliant, but she's a fantastic hand with a paintbrush. Look at that face!

Kenyan dog that rescued baby girl gets first bath, de-worming, animal welfare visit
16:00 2005-05-10
Kenyans are eager to adopt a newborn baby girl abandoned in a forest who was saved by a stray dog and discovered nestled with her own pup, officials said.
"The publicity on the way the baby was rescued has sparked a lot of public interest in helping her," said Hannah Gakuo of Kenyatta National Hospital, where the baby is being treated for an infection in its umbilical cord and exposure to cold weather.
The stray dog that saved the child struggled to cope with newfound celebrity status Tuesday, a day after its last surviving puppy died for unknown reasons, said Jean Gilchrist of the Kenya Society for the Protection and Care of Animals.
Animal welfare officials named the dog Mkombozi, or Savior, and gave the dog its first bath and de-worming Tuesday.
"She looks a bit depressed, so we'd like to examine her to see if she has a temperature or any other problem," Gilchrist said. "She wasn't happy when we all poured into the compound. She decided to leave, but kids in the compound brought her back for the bath because she was full of ticks."
Mary Adhiambo, a resident in the compound where the dog lives, said the Mkombozi apparently found the baby Friday in a plastic bag.
The dog reportedly dragged the child, named "Angel" by health workers, across a busy road and through some barbed wire to the shed in the poor Nairobi neighborhood where puppies from two stray dogs were sheltering.
Unwanted infants are often abandoned in Kenya, with poverty and failed relationships frequently to blame. Kenya's weak law enforcement and poor social security system mean most people who forsake their babies are never caught.
The baby was discovered after two children alerted elders that they heard the sound of a baby crying near their wooden and corrugated-iron-sheet shack. Residents found the mixed-breed dog lying next to the baby along with her own pup.
Residents took the child to a nearby police station to record a statement, before taking her to the Kenyatta National Hospital for treatment.
"People have been calling the hospital, asking about the possibility of adopting her," Gakuo told The Associated Press.
Officials in the government's Children Department were not immediately available to comment on the problem of abandoned babies and possible fate of Angel.
