Miami is finally catching up
Feb. 27th, 2005 10:50 amAt least a little.
Ever since I started exploring the greater Los Angeles area, it's seemed to me that Miami is a sort of 'little sibling' shadow. We seem to let L.A. beta-test all the traffic laws, because our problems develop just like theirs (on a smaller scale). One of the things Miami's lagged behind on is public art -- specifically, the wonderful underpass/expressway-side murals which are all over the SoCal counties.
In early November, we made good progress in catching up. 'Hands On Miami' worked with Xavier Cortada, who designed thematically related murals for three locations, one of which isn't far from my house. Take a look:
Allapattah Alligator (preliminary)
Downtown Manatees (in progress, at an angle)
Unfortunately, I can't find an image for the Little Havana mural.
The overall effect of his animal designs resembles Inuit/Northwestern art on acid... or at very least, jalapeƱos and orange juice. I'll have to see if I can get some pictures of the paintings in place with a couple of months of wear on them... eventually.
