(Is somebody doing something academic with this? They really should!)
Raised in southeast Florida (Miami) by Massachusettans, and watched a lot of TV, so I'm all messed up. ;)
1. A body of water, smaller than a river, contained within relatively narrow banks?
Stream, canal, rill... gutter. We don't really have bodies of water around here outside of swimming pools, canals that people drive into/throw trash into and Biscayne Bay.
2. What the thing you push around the grocery store/supermarket?
Grocery cart -- or trolley, if I'm feeling British
3. A metal container to carry a meal in?
Lunchbox
4. The thing that you cook bacon and eggs in?
Frying pan, skillet
5. The piece of furniture that seats three people?
Couch, sofa
6. The device on the outside of the house that carries rain off the roof?
The what? Rain just falls, dude.
7. The covered area outside a house where people sit in the evening?
Porch, but who would want to sit outside in the mosquitoes? (or, hey, the Florida room! It's got screens.)
8. Carbonated, sweetened, non-alcoholic beverages?
Soda.
9. A flat, round breakfast food served with syrup?
Pancakes. Mmmm... maple....
10. A long sandwich designed to be a whole meal in itself?
A sub
11. The piece of clothing worn by men at the beach?
Hopefully, a bathing suit.
Echoing
musesfool: 'But please god, never ever Speedos, unless they look like Xander in a Speedo.'
(at least, in the swimming ep. Now I'm not so sure).
12. Shoes worn for sports?
Sneakers or trainers (see note for #2)
13. Putting a room in order?
[laughs at length]
14. A flying insect that glows in the dark?
Firefly or lightning bug, depending on the bug itself.
15. The little insect arthropod that curls up into a ball?
Pillbug, if I remember the name at all.
16. The children's playground equipment where one kid sits on one side and goes up while the other sits on the other side and goes down?
See-saw, although I know of 'teeter-totter'.
17. How do you eat your pizza?
With my hands, because my mouth needs the assist.
18. What's it called when private citizens put up signs and sell their used stuff?
Garage sale or yard sale. Sometimes 'rummage sale', although that's usually at churches or schools.
19. What's the evening meal?
Properly, it's 'supper', although everybody I know uses 'dinner' and 'supper' interchangeably, unless I'm visiting my relatives in New England. 'Dinner' is supposed to be closer to lunch, or in-place-of. Gawd... call the hobbits.
20. The thing under a house where the furnace and perhaps a rec room are?
leadensky: 'Water table. Okay, okay, basement.'
*falls over laughing* She got it right the first time!
