That's almost unnerving, because as I was trying to quantify what seemed 'off' about this movie, I came up with 'it's almost like he didn't care, or was distracted'. Then I considered I was saying that about Sam Raimi and it didn't seem plausible.
That sequence certainly had me cringing in my seat and covering my eyes. The interesting thing about that reaction is that I suspect that's exactly what we were supposed to do, both on a meta level and a sympathetic level. If Raimi didn't like that storyline, he transmitted perfectly his dislike and made us harmonise with him on it; also, we're supposed to be repelled by Venomised Peter, even as we say 'huh, he looks pretty hot that way, buuuuuut....'
I'm starting to think it was more subtly skillful than I first thought.
