And then it hit me - ow! During the feudal period, younger sons often went into the (Catholic) priesthood, especially if the family inheritance was less likely to support them. The jokes and stuff really do have a basis! (Doesn't explain the recent rash of uncovered pædophilia, of course; that's a disorder, not a gender.)
