Movie commentary:
I finally got to see all except the first 10 minutes of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert last night. It's become something of a classic, and all three of the actors are highly-respected/popular performers right now.
For all of Terence Stamp's incredible bone structure, flawless wig and wonderful performance, I still liked Hugo Weaving the best -- he seemed to have the kinetics of the character down best. Guy Pierce you just want to slap most of the time, after doubletaking at those shoulders. And, erm, etc.
It was a little like To Wong Foo (actually, it's almost certainly the other way around), in that you had one queen who was the Perfect Lady; one who maybe didn't pass as well physically, but had the best attitude; and the third who was unholy pretty and something of a troublemaker. And they're both roadtrip movies. How heavily were the Wong Foo filmmakers influenced, then?
Nice character piece... and I think the costumer won an Oscar, or at least got nominated, didn't she?

Date: 2003-07-14 06:41 pm (UTC)Funny thing is that Wong Foo was a stage play before it was adapted... or was it a novel? One way or another, it was an adapted work, not an original screenplay... which begs the question of how different the source material is.
The biggest differences between the two stories is what happens when the two parties get stuck by their automotive betrayals. The, erm, lads in Australia pick up Bob and encounter thugs and that psycho Asian stripper; the Americans get to expand the consciousnesses of a small Southern town.

Date: 2003-07-14 08:19 pm (UTC)I'd have to see Priscilla again. I remember I had 3 days off before starting my current job almost 9 years ago and I went to the artsy movie theater to see it. It's been a long time!

Date: 2003-07-15 09:50 am (UTC)Is this the movie where they used a bunch of clips or stills from one of his '60s movies to create flashbacks? I thought it was a great gimmick, at least, but no, haven't seen it yet.
I fell in love with the man's cheekbones when he did Superman, I can tell you that. Hadn't heard of him before then, but I don't know why.
