I find these two... lines of thought coming out of fan reaction to HBP to be not only highly offensive, but pretty much the most misogynistic... [struggles for strong enough word] traife to come out of anything not a neo-conservative's mouth:
  • 'I think we all need to remember that JKR was pregnant, and therefore hormonal, for the majority of the time she was writing the great plot and horrible teenage romance(s). Hormones act like drugs, right?' -- No comment necessary.

  • 'I'll bet he makes her change into Sirius during sex.' -- I still don't think most R/Sers are thinking this way, but you might want to consider trying to weed out the blatant woman-haters among you, just for your own sanity, perhaps?  Because Remus willing to bed somebody with such a completely negative self-image that she'd turn into another person of a different gender is not any Remus I know.
I'm sorry if this bothers anybody in any wise, but I had to vent.

Misogynistic poopyheadedness, I believe, is the word you are looking for.

I knew there was going to be wank or something when HBP came out. I did not know just how low some disappointed shippers would stoop. They're fictional characters, for pete's sake! Ships get sunk, life goes on.

The thing about the... [steels self] 'Puppyshippers', is that they had the worse blow in OoP, one I can sympathise with them about. [livejournal.com profile] soupytwist already said something like 'So, bi?' Or would they prefer Remus as some swooning Victorian maiden, wasting away for a lost lover?

I don't really care if the shapechanging thing is intended as a joke (it was said somewhat snarkily); it's beyond the pale.

I do feel a little sorry for the more reasonable H/Hrs right now. The Interview was rather... well... final.

Wait, what? Why would the bisexuality comment imply some form of misogynism? Do I hate men because I'm bisexual? Does believing in the possibility (until proven otherwise) of a gay relationship in the books require that one hate women?

I found a lot of R/T shippers (pre-HBP, obviously. I mean, I support R/T now, because, duh) who were R/T not because of the overwhelming amounts of canon evidence during OotP (as opposed to say the overwhelming R/H evidence in GoF), but because they were specifically uncomfortable with the idea of queer relationships. It honestly revolted me that the possibility of romance within a deep, long-term friendship (without, again, the ridiculous amount of clues found in H/H versus R/H debates) would be rejected out of hand because gay people, ewwwww. . .

Also, while it would be weird for Tonk's to assume SIRIUS's form specifically, I can't see why would it be misogynistic to play with gender roles in the bedroom. And if one is a Metamorphamagus, such play would be much easier to facilitate. Whether or not you believe that it would be OOC for it to take place in the context of the R/T relationship is another debate.

I will say that I definitely could see Tonks having had some rather transgressive fun (sexual or not) in her time.

I made a cringe-inducing typographical error. It's "Tonks" not "Tonk's."

Nonono! More that there's nothing 'wrong' with Remus feeling affection for a woman at this point, presuming a gay relationship which is in his past. As in, 'what's wrong with Remus being bi?'

It honestly revolted me that the possibility of romance within a deep, long-term friendship... would be rejected out of hand because gay people, ewwwww...

Well, that's silly, of course. I personally reject it just because I don't think they were. :)

...I can't see why would it be misogynistic to play with gender roles in the bedroom...

Not as an absolute, but the inference I got from the comment was 'Oh, I don't like you as yourself, be anybody but Tonks as a girl.' Because, y'know, GURLS, yuck!

WTF???

I don't get these people. I can understand that some can feel let down by certain plots coming to pass, but sheesh... I'm not thrilled with the recent Snape developments, and if it turns out he really is Teh Evil Incarnate, I'm still going to appreciate the well-written story despite being ever-so-slightly devastated. It's JKR's book, she can do as she pleases.

Hey, y'know? [points at icon] Double disappointment for me, but other than a little mock blustering, I'm certainly not calling her deranged (especially since one thing was totally out of her control anyway).

I don't like those excuses and crazy theories people make up just so their ships have a chance of staying above water.

I know it's easy to say this now, since my ship didn't sink, but even if it did I wouldn't be going that ballistic over it. Like Crystal said, they're just fictional characters.

*rolls eyes* Silliness.

I confess, I was out sort of looking for trouble; if I stayed where I know it's sane, I wouldn't have found such... loutishness.

Just like any fandom, really, there's always the 10% on the fringe. They've just got louder voices nowadays carrying farther.

I'm old-fashioned, though. I keep expecting better. Silly....

[hug/soothe] There, there -- these are just some loudmouthed idiots having tantrums because they didn't get their way exactly how they wanted. Spoiled, really. They need to listen to what Westly said in The Princess Bride, 'Get used to disappointment.'

I guess it just worries me that they're willing to be so hateful, but perhaps they'll outgrow it.

Okay, first of all -- I just don't understand slashers who *expect* their pairing to ever become canon. I love slash. I wish there was more canon slash. But I never, ever expect it to become canon because most of the time, there's just no chance in hell. So please, get over yourselves, learn write-arounds that don't make you sound like a jackass, or maybe just *gasp* ignore some canon if it gets in your way. Like slashers have always done. (Or really, bisexuality is *not that hard* to wrap your brain around. Please.) (I'm not a fan of Remus/Tonks myself, but that's more a lack of characterization for her than anything else. It seems kind of...out-of-nowhere, a pairing just for the sake of a pairing. But that's just me.)

And I didn't think the teenage romances were horrible -- I thought they were pretty accurate. Which, yeah, means horrible, but they were as well-written as you can do such a thing. I skimmed. No one's holding a gun to your head, forcing you to read the stuff.

Date: 2005-07-21 04:47 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] sff-corgi.livejournal.com
I think you know by now I rather hate the term 'slash', because for me, at least, it carries implications of bad characterisation and cheap, porny sex acts.

(And yeeeesss, so does a lot of het. But there seem to be bragging rights involved....)

After being much bashed over my head by people willing to speak to me reasonably instead of just hauling out the flamethrowers, I finally got that romance is romance is romance... and bad writing is bad writing, and PWP is PWP.

So 'gay romance' I wouldn't mind seeing more of, just as a matter of fairness. Doesn't make me more inclined to read it, necessarily, but at least it'd be calling it what it is, instead of making it sound special or fashionable or daring [roll eyes].

Does that make sense to you? I'm still trying to get the opinion into the right shape.

Date: 2005-07-21 05:00 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] jenavira.livejournal.com
No, you make sense...see, I find that any one person's interpretation of cross-fandom terminology tends to be out of whack with anyone else's, because such terminology carries a different implication in every fandom you're in, and also has connotations with the people using it (who are sometimes total idiots). And, of course, mine is completely out of whack with *everyone's* because I'm not in fandom so much anymore as I talk about fandom with a few close friends, and we use "slash" for just about everything, including these tremendously gen Jekyll/Frankenstein fics we're throwing out from time to time.

Someday I'm going to write an anthro paper on fandom, about how there is no such thing as "fandom" because everybody is involved in different fandoms and different parts of fandoms and we all get terribly confused when we think we're talking about the same thing but we're not really. Someday.
