...of Christmas, my true love gave to me:

Sixth Day: Six geese a-laying (quilt block)

Kwanzaa stampHappy sixth day of Kwanzaa!

Today's Principle Is:
Kuumba

Kuumba candle

Kuumba -- creativity! 'On this day, we pledge several things. We pledge to do whatever we can to make our communities and homes more beautiful and better than we found them. We also pledge to use our creative talents and energies to improve young minds and hearts.' (c) 1998 Alice N. T. Reid (Khadijah)

KUUMBA Yams

The whole family can explore different flavors, and use KUUMBA (kwanzaa principle of creativity) to decorate their yams. A fun and delicious treat!
  • 6-8 medium yams

  • butter

  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil

  • 1 cup honey

  • spices: nutmeg, cinnamon allspice

  • fruits: raisins, grated coconut, pinapple chunks, apple slices
Wash yams thoroughly.

Rub yams with vegetable oil.

Place in uncovered shallow baking dish.

Bake approximately 45 minutes or until tender when pricked with a fork.

Allow to cool for ten minutes.

Children will explore a variety of tastes by adding different spices and/or fruits to their yams.

"The Cloth Weaver"

The creative art of cloth weaving and design is illustrated by our KUUMBA Kinara (Creativity). Characterized by an abundance of minute detail, e.g., that found in the weaver's braided hair or in the decorative patterns in the cloth, "The Cloth Weaver" is our most time-intensive piece. The sculpture takes roughly 40 hours to make.

MMMMM... Starbucks Caramel Apple Cider! It's [livejournal.com profile] myfanwy's fault, she got me hooked when we went to Vancouver, just before I had my great Hastings Street deja vu moment.

Found this, but honestly, there are times when I hate fussing and find it worth the money. Which is, of course, why restaurants ...are.
Starbucks' Caramel Apple Cider is truly the nectar of the gods. I asked a Starbucks' employee the other day how he makes it and this is what he told me for a large size:
  • Cinnamon syrup- a couple of squirts (sold in the store)

  • TreeTop premium apple juice

  • Whipped cream

  • Carmel [sic!] syrup drizzled on top
Blend cinnamon syrup with apple juice. Top with whipped cream and carmel syrup.

My PC has decided to act up again. Why can't everything work at the same time, just for a while? I was sitting here innocently multitasking like a fiend (finding good material for my Kuumba post, eh?) and suddenly... *FOOM*. Video goes out (the monitor went amber), and the CD drive starts watchdogging. It wouldn't boot up again until I got both the CD and DVD trays out and held them out. They're currently jammed open with an old ink cartridge, as when I tried closing the DVD, the PC booted again.

And it's done it w/o the drives being closed at least once since. I'm saving docs like a fiend right now. Blast. I wanted to just get the laptop, finally -- now I might have to get a desktop as well.

  • Forgot to say this about [livejournal.com profile] perceval: She's quite friendly and welcoming to virtual strangers. :D

  • Forgot to say this about [livejournal.com profile] sff_corgi:  I have spectacular hair, in which is invested much self-image-esteem.

  • Didn't get the chance to say this about [livejournal.com profile] sit_good_dog yet: She's the best friend I've made since [livejournal.com profile] myfanwy and yes, there's qualifiers 'cause I don't want to hurt anyone's feelings, but I'm not going into them here.

I would have sworn [livejournal.com profile] sit_good_dog had posted it, but swelp me if I can find it right now. A little something on what January 1 means to me... now.

Star Sirius, Torchbearer of the New Year

No less a fixture than the tolling bells and fireworks that bring in the New Year, brilliant Sirius, the brightest star of the night sky, is truly the star of the hour. Sirius celebrates its favorite holiday by culminating due south at the stroke of midnight, annually proclaiming the birth of the New Year, year after year.

WTCKH! It's a card from [livejournal.com profile] hellcatjelybean! All the way from Over There!

[sounds of excavation] OK, I've got to unearth the scanner for this, finally. It's a multi-step process, you see, because the scanner is nearly shoved under a table, and also hooked up to the Compaq, so I have to scan there, then sneakernet over to here, then finally upload the target images.

[livejournal.com profile] ninglor linked to [livejournal.com profile] twistedchick's detail on the legislation the Kudzu snuck by the American people.

She borrowed it from the ACLU website and therefore it has a little more detail on the various sections of the... legislation. I can't think of a suitable substitute noun for it.

Wish Canada would relax its immigration laws for political refugees....

I love doing begats. It's fun to see how far back things go, which is why the Best Blonde Joke got a big laugh out of me. Got this from [livejournal.com profile] hellcatjelybean, who got it from [livejournal.com profile] queen_ottf... who, blast her, didn't say where she got it from! [shakes stern paw at the Queen]

One of the things I picked up at Target last night was a disposable camera which has the CD option included. [shrug] I'd rather not deal with Wal*Mart, even if it might be cheaper. So I will take pictures of such vitally important things as my curtains -- yes, [livejournal.com profile] sidhe_darkrose, they're finally done and hung up and of COURSE they're a half-a-foot too short as they were measured for other windows -- and the Stack-O-Corgis (also known as the Twr-a-Corgwn) and the Plush Marauders Plus One.

Bet you lot can't wait, can you? [eg]
