OK, if Sauron got one ring, the elves got three, the dwarves got seven and the men got nine... who got five rings? And it's not a Christmas joke, either. Why the break in the pattern?
Unless this is covered in canon somewhere where I have not strayed, it'd be a nice plot bunny to explain why trolls are so utterly dim, wouldn't it? And/or a lack of giants? Something happened to this theoretical five rings which was so terrible, it destroyed a whole race and made them monsters. (All the rings stayed with humanoids, so that lets the Ents and suchlike out of the running....)
