Just got back from seeing Master and Commander with my friend Debbie -- would you believe I managed to forget it was a Peter Weir movie? Should have remembered just from the gorgeous photography.

I can tell you, I don't know about the mundanes, but the re-enactors are going to LOVE this movie. It's not my period, but I know enough to know they did a lot of meticulous work on the details of ship operations and culture of the early 1800s. It feels right. It also manages to avoid a lot of clichés. The Hornblower fandom should appreciate this film... at least the ones who aren't fans just for the organic scenery. ;)

Esp. for Soupy: BILLEH! I miss the Glaswegian, though, but his plain-English (relatively plain) is very solid.

The SFX are flawless, as far as I could tell (but there's a lot to watch). You'd never guess there were any tanks involved. They actually went to the Galapagos to film, but you'd never guess anything could live there, never mind exotic species.

The story is very rich; you can tell there's a lot going on in-between and behind and around. I'm quite curious about the books now; I'm surprised I hadn't heard of them before the production started getting publicity.

Bah.

This is supposed to be twelve years of imprisonment, 'formerly' handsome but now sallow and vampiric-looking with waist-length matted black hair?

(You want the canon refs? I got a table.)

Yes, I'm bitter and kvetchy, and no, you aren't getting any relief from it any year soon. Sorry. I'm a Celt, this is what we're good at.
