(Why did my Semagic lose all my settings? [cusswords])

  • No, no word from anywhere on Gemma, but I still have to check the piece-of-junk phone.

  • Did I mention a man drove by around 7ish yesterday, said he remembered seeing Gemma outside the fence about that same time the day before? So there's some evidence she did what I was expecting.

  • Papered my neighbourhood more on the way home.

  • Man stopped by the house with a little pug on a harness this morning, said he was a lost dog (the pug, obviously) and asked if he were mine. I thought it was a young dog at first, friendly enough, but his eyes look awfully damaged, poor boy. He wrenched away from me when I tried to look at his teeth, so I'm not sure how old he actually is. I told the man he should try getting the pug scanned for a chip at Knowles - maybe he will, he didn't seem to know about ID chips. Hopefully, there is one and the pug will get home.

  • Went to Animal Control and walked the pens. I had to seek out my inner Vulcan to manage my composure - I hate that place and there are certain facts about it that I cannot allow myself to think about. I didn't get to talk to the Lost&Found officer, he just didn't show up while I was there, but I left him two flyers and the appropriate form. Bizarrely, despite not wearing anything like either the Animal Services uniform or the volunteer T-shirt, I kept getting mistaken for someone who worked there. It must have been my aura of familiarity and determined stride. Or something.

Debbie, her dad and sister picked me up and we went to see HP OoP in IMAX 3-D up in Fort Lauderdale. in_the_blue was, of course, right about how well the whole thing worked; it summed up very smoothly and efficiently. Yet another casting director I believe, but this one chose an excellent Luna. They didn't horrid-up Imelda Staunton not half enough, though, but I was amazed and delighted how much Umbridge's office resembled the decor we applied to Dogstar Academy the first April Fool's we pulled. I'm somewhat distressed (with a bit of relief) that despite the better adaptation - so efficient, can we get it nominated? - I wasn't really able to connect to Sirius as much as... likely. On the whole, I felt shorted once again in that direction. Yeeeeesss, I know it's Harry's story, yeahyeahyeah. BTW, Daniel's turning into quite a bit of something there, isn't he? Grint's the terminal character actor, but Dan's going to get pretty much anything he wants.

There was eating of couch and soiling of kitchen while I was gone, but everybody was accountable-for. I just let Annie in under her own power after she was out for a couple hours, playing with Puppy. It's amazing how not worrying about her being there or not relieves my stress (well... mostly not worrying).

One of my new acquaintances on Second Life - yes, I succumbed - had invited me to the party for the opening of his new restaurant. Here's the interesting part - he's a Jägermonster, from Girl Genius. And I was invited as Baron Klaus Wulfenbach. *grin* Yeah, it's a little odd. I still don't feel particularly entitled to speak for the Baron in first person. It's sort of a low-end freeform RP at this point. I invited Supergirl as my... well, my date, so to speak. There was dancing (I have piccies), then there was much lag (system slowdown, chronic whenever there's a lot of people in one place). Unfortunately, some of the lag was personal, for both me and my lovely escort - we both were falling asleep mid-party. so we left separately before the end. I'm being complimented on my appearance, so I've re-created the character as well as I've hoped. He needs better hair, though. That's in the works.

Not a bad day for an ongoing kidnap and repeated sleep deprivation.

By John Cox, Network World, 07/19/07

Among the many mysteries, both great and small, surrounding the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry is the attempt to create a computer network in the mid-1990s.

Until now, almost nothing has been known of this secretive and short-lived project, or of the Muggle hired to bring it to fruition as the school’s first and, to date, last director of information technology.

But in the most recent release by Hogwarts of the papers of its late headmaster, Albus Dumbledore, is a memo from the director, one J.W. Coxrid, announcing his resignation. Aside from his being a Muggle, Coxrid’s antecedents are unknown. The memo reveals a singularly unhumorous man, quick to take offense, and with a well-developed sense of his own self-importance, which is typical in those steeped in arcane disciplines.

As is often the case in the magical world, precise dates are uncertain. The memo itself is undated, and independent accounts of the period (cf. the work of Rowling, J.K.) make no mention of the ill-starred project or of Coxrid. But other documents, including payroll records from the Ministry of Magic, make it clear that Coxrid was hired around mid-1995 and resigned abruptly the following Spring.

All that is know of Coxrid’s subsequent carrier is that he invested recklessly in a series of increasingly hare-brained Dotcom start-ups, such as virtualgardening.net (“Leave the dirt and bugs where they belong: in the real world!”) and the mercifully short-lived babesofIT.com. When the Internet Bubble burst, so did his fortunes.

There is a brief obituary of one “J. Coxrid” that appeared in “The Times” in early 2002. Reading between the terse lines, it is clear that this wretch died drunk, destitute and alone, a mere shell of the promising IT professional he once was.

He left behind one mystery. The police report on the death of J. Coxrid includes a summary of an interview with a neighbor who described at length Coxrid’s feverish attempt, indeed obsession, to design and develop an innovative hand-held communicator: it would run on an EDGE cellular network, include Bluetooth and Wi-Fi radios, be able to play music and video files, and most notably of all have but a single button, the device being manipulated by brushing one’s fingers over a sensitive touch screen (one cannot but think that this was inspired by Coxrid’s encounter with wizardry at Hogwarts). He called the device the xPhone and all of his thoughts, sketches, diagrams, and plans were kept in a cheap composition-style notebook.

That notebook, if it ever existed, was never found.

Plucked from the personal archives of the late Albus Dumbledore, headmaster

Re: your frumpis
Now that's funny right there.
  • Frumpis, an abandoned blog

  • Frumpis, Merriam-Webster open dictionary, definition

  • Frumpis, a pair of SG-1 fans' nickname for the McDonald's character 'Grimace' (although with Teal'c's face)

  • Frumpis, a Google-cache code error for the name 'François'.
Then, because this was apparently sent to the Weird Sisters Y!group owner (yeah, I know it's dead, but it's a good archive), this quote was attached:
Percy had bustled over, rubbing his hands together and looking extremely pompous. "Excellent! That’s the whole point, you know - international magical cooperation!"

While looking for something completely unrelated, I came across this comment/link in a cosplay forum or blog, which referred to this LJ post in October by [livejournal.com profile] kungfooqueen as the source for the link; reading the comments, the original clip, as it turns out was posted by MuggleNet in June.

So I don't know how I missed it. Sheesh, the original post has over 500 comments....

No Grims. No Veela, either. Or leprechauns, house elves, daughters of the House of Black, or many Weasleys. Minimal Snape, even.

But considering they had to start with a doorstop, I think they managed to cover things pretty decently (Doreen: 'It's too fast! It's too fast!').

I met [livejournal.com profile] heidi8, Georgie (if I'm spelling her name correctly) and Marci, from the S. Fla. 'Harry Potter Meetup' to go in together. We were, however, separated when the promoter would only allow Heidi's press pass to seat herself and one other (Marci) in the press area; Georgie and I stayed up nearly in nosebleed territory, but Lo! And Behold! Here comes Doreen-from-work and her daughter Stephani (if I'm spelling her name correctly), looking for seats! What fun!

Before the movie started, there was, for me, a REAL treat. The Superman Returns trailer... set to John William's goose-bump-raising 'Krypton' theme and voiced over by a certain Welshman [cue music: Hen Wlad fy Nhadau] (I'm fairly sure!). Looks hot. *beam!*

Spoilers, such as they may be for a currently published work, begin here. )

So -- on the whole, aside from the EOEs, it's well put together and rather satisfying. Kloves' unhealthy Hermione-obsession seems to've been held in check, and the twins really ARE priceless in this. They are, as they say, worth the price of admission. There's really not a lot I can see to quibble over -- nothing substantial, at least. Tom Riddle gravestone issue aside, it seems to respect the novel and the intent of the novel a bit more than PoA did (hush, Heidi!).

I do wish Olympe Maxim didn't look like she was on stilts the whole time, though.

(This board contains adult material.)

Dogstar Academy for the Defensive Arts is an active and well-established adult roleplay board set in the Harry Potter universe. With a focus on writing, we are a board for those 17 and older who wish to improve their writing skills and interact with a friendly and dedicated community.

Our plot brings us to a time well after Harry and his friends have left the great halls of Hogwarts: well after Voldemort has been defeated, yet long before all evil has been removed from power.

Dolores Umbridge gained the title of Minister of Magic a little over two years ago. This title bore the kind of unrestricted power that should never have been given to such a person. Instantly, all half-humans and beasts found themselves rounded up and imprisoned. Fugitives from the Ministry (those who opposed Umbridge) were apprehended. A goal to place Ministry outposts all over the country was set. It so happened that their first (not so shiny, not so new) acquisition was Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Minister Umbridge, along with her army of Death Eaters and Dementors, took it swiftly. She lost only a handful of students and professors to escape prior to her arrival. Leading them was the notorious and most wanted wizard in all Britain: Sirius Black.

It is now in one of the last strongholds of resistance that the man who eluded the Ministry for so many years is doing it again. This time, however, he's running an academy in the only way he knows how: by teaching illegal magic, of course. Castell Seren-Ci, more recently known as Dogstar Academy for the Defensive Arts, is a home and sanctuary to those it keeps. It is a training ground for all who oppose the current Ministry, and those who take the more difficult road of standing up to the government find themselves here one way or another.

Eventually.

Dogstar Academy. The war isn't coming: it's already upon us.

(Hey, it's better than listening to the news, right?)

  • If Slugworth taught Snape, Lily and the Marauders Potions; and Snape's an unparallelled (as far as we know) Potions genius, especially as evinced by his student-era notes... why doesn't Slughorn speak more of how brilliant he was?  Certainly, there's to be some comparisons between a student and her son, but Snape's the one who went on to make Potions a career....

  • Ron's watch that he received from his parents for his majority has stars in place of hands; we've seen Time Turners, for one, and we know that a simple locket's going to be a major player next book.  Is there something special about this watch?  Is it being waved before us the way we had 'oak-aged mead' whapped over our heads when Dumbledore visited the Dursleys'?

  • I just noticed - aren't all Dumbledore's appointment notes to Harry being delivered by, and only by, members of 'Dumbledore's Army'?

Some of you know that I've been wearing a doctor-prescribed brace on my ankle for some months now to correct 20-years'-worth of undiagnosed ligament damage.

Why, might you ask, 20 years? Sloppy work. [glower]

Anyway, I just wanted to let you know that it's pretty alarming to feel one's ankle start to come apart in mid-step on one.

This is why I now have a nifty pair of folding hex (no, Ara!) wrenches. The $30 worth of plants was an accident.

P.S. G. and I were substantially right about options available within the parameters of the Fidelis Charm. Go us.
