I've already asked Jared in e-mail, but let's throw this open to the flist. From Blade:
I want to get onto Second Life. I already have a Second Life Half-Life (as it were) waiting for me, courtesy of Herr Wulfenbach and the Matrons (sounds like a rock band) at the Europa Consulate in Caledon. But I need a videocard upgrade first.

You see, I have a persnickety monitor. (I got it on Black Friday 2006. You get what you pay for -- it's 22" wide and quite lovely, but .... weird, technically speaking.) Here are the specs I need in a videocard in order to have it work with my monitor:

~ an AGP slot-type unit.
~ NOT anything that says "QUADRO".
~ must support "WSXGA+" (1680 x 1050)

And according to Second Life, here are my options (using WinXP as I am) for supported videocards (the beefier the better, obviously) that will let me actually get in-world:

~ Nvidia Graphics cards (6000 series: 6700, 6800; 7000 series: 7600, 7800, 7900; 8000 series: 8400, 8500, 8600, 8800; GeForce Go: 7400, 7600, 7800, 7900)
~ ATI Graphics Cards (X800, X900; X1400, X1500, X1600, X1700, X1800, X1900)

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to match the requirements in List 1 with one of the cards in List 2, and tell me about it here. Please and thanks. 8D

Ma just commented about Frank Langella's character in the travesty of science and entertainment running on who-knows-what channel right now:
'He's like you, nobody can understand what he's saying. He's a scientist.'

Every search I've done in Google for a reader for .JML files keeps coming up
with an answer from Jabber.org saying 'get help from Jabber.com'. I'm not sure
why nobody seems to've published a straight and simple answer to this question
where Google can find it, but I'm hoping you might be able to give me one.

How can .jml history files be read, please?

Thank you,

Hi [Corgi],

.jml files are encrypted files used by Jabber Messenger 2.7.x to locally
store message history for 1-to-1 chats. The only way to access the
information is via Jabber Messenger by viewing the message history for a
specific contact.

Thanks for your interest in Jabber,

Of all places, The Hair Cuttery is a free hotspot. Yes, instead of cut and curl, it's style and surf. I don't know if any stores outside of the one in Doral have wireless (could not confirm via Google), but this one has the network name of 'linksys'. Sure, sitting outside on the sidewalk's kind of conspicuous, but the signal's just as good outside their back door. :)

Office Depot has added free wireless, although someplace within the store to actually surf without being stepped on by other customers is questionable right now. I only saw the sign on their door, so I don't know what their network name would be yet. According to the rather vague statements of the employees I asked, all the stores should be thusly equipped. I'll get back to you on this one.

Not-so-free wireless:

I don't know if they ship internationally, but PC Connection has U.S. Robotic's wireless network kit. This has a US$55.00 rebate on it! With their rather excessive shipping charges, once you get your money back, you'll get a router and USB adapter for less than $30 total. You just have to have the capital to lay out the extra for a month or two....

Let me repeat: wireless router and adapter for $15.00. Woo!

[livejournal.com profile] sit_good_dog has apologised for giving me a new obsession. I'm chasing FREEEEEEE WIRELESS, MUAH-HA-HA-HAAAAA!!

The following's a list of mixed local (i.e., South Florida) and national free wireless providers. Everybody else, you're on your own.

Did y'all hear about Pat Robertson's latest spout of insanity? It's worth quoting only to laugh at in scornful disbelief:
“I’d like to say to the good citizens of Dover: if there is a disaster in your area, don’t turn to God, you just rejected him from your city. And don’t wonder why he hasn’t helped you when problems begin, if they begin. I’m not saying they will, but if they do, just remember, you just voted God out of your city. And if that’s the case, don’t ask for his help because he might not be there,” on The 700 Club
For those of you who might have missed the kerfuffle, the clear-minded voters of Dover, PA just tossed out their school board after several families brought suit against said board for approving a policy allowing 'Intelligent Design' to be taught in public schools. I believe only one board member was not up for re-election at this time, so she's the only survivor of the purge.

Hoooooboy. You shoulda heard Mike Malloy rant on this one! Complete, mind you, with 'Carmina Burana'-like soundtrack.

[whimper] Can anybody out there tell me how to change my 'reply' link to one of those amusing little comments, like 'insult a hippogriff' and such?

And change the colours assigned to Friends... it lets me set them to anything in the client, but it's limited on the website; and then the client doesn't give me an option to change them.
